If the line moves, it is probably because you don't select it before. 1) - The line is NOT selected and Arrow tool is selected - I move the Arrow near one of the ends of the line - The cursor changes to Attraction to the vertex - Then I can click to take the line exactly on this point and MOVE IT 2)...

Why not simply select the line and then take it on the handle you want and extend it with the mouse ?
It will not more time consuming than any other method.

In "Preferences" => "Setting of path" there is an option to zoom or not the width of the paths.
