Cut Lines With Lines...

How does this tool work? I THINK it's what I need...

I draw a horizontal rectangle, and convert to lines. I draw a vertical line through it. I would like to change the line segments to one side of my vertical, to dashed lines. It seems to me that the Cut Lines With Lines should cut the horizontal lines of my rectangle, making them two segments, so that I could convert them to dashed lines. But either I am (once again) doing something wrong, or I misunderstand the concept of the tool.

EDIT: OK, I found the instructions, and I see that it is NOT what I thought it was. Is there a tool to do what I've described? That is, show part of my rectangle as "hidden?"

You can do what you want with this tool.
But after, you have to set dashed the lines you want like this.

Sorry, Eric, but I don't understand.

Draw the rectangle
Draw the vertical line
Select the rectangle
Convert it to lines
Add the vertical line to the selection
Call the command "Cut lines with lines"
Choose "Cut" and "All with the last selected" (like this the last selected is the line which does the cut)
Lines of rectangle are cut
Select which you want and do them dotted
Done

That did it, Eric. I was not understanding the sequence of actions. Many thanks!
