Text "stacks" on entry

Post by Mikerosen »

Eric, I believe we've spoken about this in the past.

When I enter text, it seems that the text frame is locked to a very narrow field. This causes the text to return to the next line, even when it shouldn't. I can select the text box and drag it out, and the text aligns properly. But if I try to edit the text, it again stacks. Very annoying. This goes back years, and many updates. Is there anyplace to preset those text frame dimensions?

Bonjour Mike,

If a long text is entered near the limit of the drawing, RealCADD adjusts it across several lines so that it does not “go beyond” the boundaries of the drawing.
Do you have this also when you enter a text not near the limits of the drawing?
Thanks.

Yes. I have the problem on all text entry.

Mike,

What is the size of your drawing? (Menu "Edit" -> "Drawing size...")
Are you putting texts outside the drawing area?

Perhaps, I must remove this feature on texts when they are created outside the drawing area.

Cordialement.

What I find a bit disconcerting is when you have a body of text that is deliberately multiple lines as constrained by the text box (not because of line returns).

If you then go to edit it, the text shoots out on to one line (unless by doing so it hits the edge of the drawing in which case it goes to more than one line). Then when you've finished editing it, it quite correctly reverts to the width of the original text box.

It would, IMHO, be much better when editing, if text remained inside the width of the text box that has been set. Otherwise you get text going all over drawn objects etc. which is very confusing to edit.

After all – if you want wider text you can simply widen the text box.

George's text shoots out to the side, and mine shoots down. Strange.

I don't set any text window size. I tap the A, click in the drawing, and start typing. Should I be setting a text frame first? How would I do that?

Mike,

You didn't respond to my questions about drawing size and if you putt texts outside the drawing area.

I think we're getting a bit confused here!

Outside the drawing:

If you type text totally outside the drawing, then it is constrained in a very narrow box and inevitably extends downwards.

If you then select the text and extend the box by dragging its handles, the text will adjust to the wider box.

If you subsequently add more text (still outside the drawing) it reverts to the original narrow box and extends downwards while editing – but reverts to the wider box once you finish.

Inside the drawing:

Typing text inside the drawing, the text box adjusts to the length of text entered (assuming no line returns). You can then adjust the width of the text as required by dragging the box handles and it will adjust to more than one line if you make the box narrower.

If you subsequently edit that text (assuming no line returns) it reverts to one line, extending horizontally, until you complete the edit, when it then reverts back to the original width of the box.

Special case:

Text that starts inside the drawing but hits the edge of the drawing while typing constrains the text box automatically so that it does not extend outside the drawing. If you then edit the text, it stays inside the text box width while editing.

If you move the text away from the edge of the drawing wholly inside the drawing and edit it, it extends horizontally while editing, reverting to its original width when editing is finished.

If you move the text away from the edge of the drawing wholly outside the drawing and edit it, it goes to a very narrow box and extends vertically downwards while editing, reverting to its original width when editing is finished.

My argument:

Once you have set the text box size by dragging the handles after entering the original text (whether inside, outside, or extending over the drawing boundary) it would be better if text was always constrained within that text box horizontally while editing. And if you wish to make it wider (or narrower) you can easily do so by dragging the handles.

I suppose there is an argument for having an option to set a text box width before entering text, but I personally have always found this to be a bit cumbersome, so for me that would only ever be an option, not mandatory.

For me, the current arrangement (inside the drawing) would be perfect if it just maintained the set text box width while editing! I don't enter text outside the drawing.

Cheers -- George
